New York City (Day 1): Welcome to Times Square!

posted by:

After a wonderful breakfast [part 1, part 2] (not exactly at Tiffany’s but at Brooklyn Diner), a walk down Times Square was the prefect remedy to help digest the meal. Seriously, after such a huge meal… a walk (the longer the better) is very much necessary, VERY MUCH necessary.

Times Square kinda reminds me of Seoul (South Korea) with a mix of Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). In a good way of course.

Boutiques => Seoul, South Korea
Streets => Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

I liked my trip to Seoul, and Kuala Lumpur is somewhat my favourite part of Malaysia. So yeah, it’s all good.

Anyway, while walking down Times Square we passed by one of the T-Mobile outlets.

Mobile phones here are dirt cheap! A phone together with a basic prepaid line cost less than USD70. They even have customised plans for bloggers, or so says the brochures.

I got myself a plan with 500 minutes talk-time, unlimited text and unlimited data (a more expensive prepaid plan that works on my BlackBerry)! All for the price of USD72, without contract. It’s the unlimited data that sealed the deal really.

Getting the line was like being reconnected to the world again. I could tweet on the go and BBM my friends! I literally jumped for joy. Even the sales guy said “you’re just happy to BBM eh.” I’m guessing my giggling, the sparkle in my eyes and the jumping kinda gave me away.

(Moving along…)

I like Sesame Street. Cookie Monster happens to be one of my favourite characters. The M&M on the other hand… I don’t know.

Oh yes…

You got it! We have similar bags!

New York City (Day 1): Breakfast at Tiffany’s #2

The last couple of days has been tiring, my feet are killing me. So anyway, back to breakfast.

We discovered Brooklyn Diner “American Grille” and it was pretty neat, in a “classic” kinda way.

Come home to the Brooklyn of your childhood in one of the most unique and exciting party spaces in New York.

The food and service wasn’t too bad, a little on the expensive side (compared to Singapore) and a little too generous (in terms of serving), but an enjoyable experience nonetheless.

Okay, this is a little off-point, but… well… the waiters here in New York City are kinda cute. Maybe it’s just me. I don’t know. Walking the streets for sooo long, I might be delusional. But seriously, the waiter that was serving us was really really cute!

(Back to breakfast.)

Breakfast picks:

The supposed “big breakfast” meal for Teddybear.

And pancakes for me! I totally love pancakes for breakfast. Then again, I love pancakes period, waffles too.

If you’re in New York City and wanna check out the Brooklyn Diner, here are the addresses:

Brooklyn Diner 57th St.
212 West 57th Street
(between Broadway and 7th Ave.)
Tel: 212 977 1957

Brooklyn Diner Times Square
155 W. 43rd Street
(between Broadway and 6th Ave.)
Tel: 212 265 5400

They have two outlets, we were at the Times Square one if not mistaken.

New York City: Quick update from Chinatown!

Going off the “story line” for a bit…

Well, I’m still in New York City but moved from Madison Ave, 31st Street (Midtown) to Chinatown (Lower Manhattan) – major price difference in accommodations.

The good thing about New York City, it’s totally connected. I’m on BBM like 24/7! The bad thing… the time difference is a huge bummer. It’s not really the Big Apple’s fault, can’t help it if it’s the other side of the world (so to speak). Basically, when my friends are awake, I’m asleep, vice versa.

The only chance of getting to speak to or text them, is if they stay up or I stay up late. Oh well.

Okay, gonna check out Chinatown. TTYL!

New York City (Day 1): Breakfast at Tiffany’s #1

The hotel’s bed was really comfortable, but strangely enough… I still managed to wake up really early.

By 8.30am, we were out of the hotel and making our way to grab some breakfast. We considered heading to the pizza place (Empire Pizza) from the night before, but as we continued walking forward (towards the direction of Times Square), we were just too lazy to go backwards.

It’s typical of us really. Come to think of it, we only got the hotel like the night before the flight. We’re “easy going” people, or some would say… “disorganised” depending on how you look at it.

So yeah, having not done much research on the area we were going to spend 5 nights at, this morning “walk”, in search for breakfast, gave us the opportunity (or excuse) to check out our neighbourhood.

Despite it’s name, it’s not really a fashion-oriented street. I don’t really know why it’s called “Fashion Ave” really.

And finally…

We found a breakfast place! What did we have? Well… try make a guess? I’m tired, gonna continue after some shut eye.

New York City: Arrival

I’ve never taken a 14 over hour flight in my life before, and I’m not even including the 4 hours from Singapore to Hong Kong.

So yeah, it’s like a whole day of flying. Tiring, but one hell of an experience.

The worst part of the whole journey had gotta be the mad rush to catch the connecting flight from Hong Kong to New York. It was totally insane. I barely had time to use the ladies. Thankfully, we made it, or so I thought.

We stood, we hoped, we were disappointed.

It seems our baggages didn’t make the flight. Panic was not an option. It’s gonna be a one day wait, not really that bad, but definitely not good.

Fyi, if you’re heading to New York City, I strongly recommend you change SGD to USD in Singapore. I was shocked to see the rates at the airport. Can you imagine paying extra SGD190 for every USD1,000? It’s as though they forgot recession hit. Seriously.

Cabbing is totally expensive compared to Singapore. The base price is like USD45 and on top of that you still have toll, etc. It took like 30 minutes from the airport to Hotel Roger Williams, a Midtown New York City hotel, and cost like USD50. (You could look at the plus side though, if there’s a traffic jam, it’s still gonna be USD50.)

After we checked in the hotel room, it was kinda 10+pm. We went to grab a pizza (totally awesome pizza if I may add), picked up some drinks and chips then headed back to get some sleep.

It was late, so… no photos.

New York City: Before the flight

It would have been great if Cathay Pacific sent the SMS like 30 minutes earlier. They didn’t, and I was standing below my block by the time I was notified the flight was delayed for 2 hours.

All was good, it’s just 2 hours. At least that’s what I was telling myself.

So instead of heading to the airport right after they picked me up, we went for breakfast at Compass Point. I never wake up early enough for breakfast, well, not in the last couple of months that is.

By 10am, we were at the Terminal 1 (yes, Changi Airport) all set for take off. Well, almost all set.

We chilled at Dome Cafe for a bit, just to straighten stuff out and grab a latte.

And yes, I tweeted away as if there was no tomorrow.

We were given vouchers by Cathay Pacific for complimentary lunch – SGD7 for food and a can drink – for the flight delay.

The selections were limited and totally expensive. I would NEVER buy chicken rice in Singapore for SGD7 unless it’s like totally recommended. Then again, I never really fancied chicken rice.

After the not-really-that-horrible meal (it was bad, just not “that” bad)… just to have something to post on my blog, I took a couple of photos! (I’m loving the Olympus E-PL1 – mine is white.)

The pink t-shirt/dress is from Tokyo Pink and the jacket is Pull and Bear. It’s my favourite jacket, and yes, they don’t exactly match.

I can’t explain why I keep forgetting to change US dollars. Even though I was standing right in front of the money changer. My brain just keep doing calculations on how much I’m losing out: 1.36 buying, 1.42 selling.

By the end of it, I found myself still stuck with only USD10. The 10 that Cathy gave me back in 2007? Tsk.

Fyi, we totally had to make a run for the gate. Despite being totally early, we managed to “hang around” for the longest time we could imagine and only got to the gate 3 minutes before it closed.

PS: The worst happened, but you’ll have to find out in the next entry. In case you’re wondering, the flight was on May 28. This is kinda a post-entry.

PPS: It’s 4+am right now, I should sooo be sleeping. Gonna watch the latest episode of Naruto and Kaichou wa Maid-sama then hit the sacks.

PPPS: Yes, New York City is in the United States of America (USA).

Hello, New York City!

I’ve finally arrived at New York City! It’s “day one” and I’m kinda hogging the hotel lobby’s computer to type this entry.

It’s the first time ever that I got up at 7am without having set the alarm clock. Really means nothing if you consider it’s 7pm SGT.

My baggages are not here yet, so I’m kinda lack of wardrobe selection (in fact, I only have the ones on my back) right now. Gonna chill at a cafe or something till the shops open. This is sooo exciting! I’m so wishing I could stay here forever. It’s like Singapore, with awesome weather.

xoxo New York City!

PS: I’ve never been to the United States of America (USA). This is totally my virgin visit.
