Dont be a Victim of Date Rape Drugs

A fraction of a second is all it takes to drop a drug into your drink. It can even be done by a stranger as he walks by, with just a quick flick in the right direction. Drinking a beverage spiked with a date rape drug can take away your ability to fight back and your memory of what was done to you. A fun night out can end up being more than you bargained for.

Date rape drugs can be added easily to a victim's drink or food, causing sedative, hypnotic and amnesiac effects. The most popular date rape drugs are Rohypnol, Ketamine and GHB, which is short for gamma hydroxybutyric. Out of the three, Rohypnol is a legal prescription drug in Singapore. In addition, alcohol is a legal and a more easily obtained means of intoxicating a victim. Sexual predators often use drugs and/or alcohol to get control over their victims.

Here's my advice to protect yourselves:

Watch your Drink

Never leave your glass unattended. If someone offers you a drink at a club or a party, watch the drink being poured and brought to you. If you're given a drink from a guy chatting you up, and you have no idea if it's safe, politely decline it. (You can't be THAT desperate for a free drink!)

Even though most date rape drugs are tasteless, odorless, and colorless, I would still advice against drinking anything that has an unusual taste or appearance, like a salty taste or unexplained residue.

Trust your Instincts

If someone or some place makes you feel uneasy, trust your instincts and walk away. The gut feel is usually a woman's best defense.

Rely on your Friends

Use a buddy system to watch out for your girlfriends. Safety in numbers when going to the restroom or the dance floor. Make sure no one has to stumble home on her own when she's pissed drunk. This is especially important if you're expecting to be partying hard and drinking lots.

Don't be Afraid to Scream

Never hesitate to scream and alert people if you feel that you're in danger. You can recover from a moment of embarrassment in a lot less time than what it would take to heal from rape and sexual abuse. When I was a teenager at Zouk, I once got very very intoxicated to the point I thought I had been drugged. Our male friend, Chris, helped to carry me out of the club and drive me home (I could hardly walk). Feeling extremely drunk, and helpless in his arms, I actually screamed hysterically as we passed the bouncers at the exit- "He put something in my drink!!!"

Poor Chris was stopped by the bouncers and questioned. My friends all came to ascertain that he was indeed taking me home because I was drunk and not drugged. The thing is, yeah I wasn't drugged after all... I was just a drunken teenage loser. But if I had been drugged and if the guy carrying me out had been a predator, I would have just saved my life then. (By the way, Chris, thank you for rescuing me so many times growing up).

Know the Signs Date Rape

If you didn't have much to drink and yet you wake up the next day feeling hung over and have memory lapses about what happened the night before at the party or on the date, that may be a sign of having been drugged. If your clothes are not right, or you feel like someone had sex with you, but you can't remember it, please go to a doctor immediately for a check up.

Request a urine sample for drug toxicology testing and have them test for date rape drugs. Preserve as much physical evidence as possible. Don’t shower, or wash the clothing you were wearing during the incident. If you delay going to a doctor, there may be no trace of the drug left in your system after about 72 hours.

It is sad that there are people out there who would resort to date rape drugs in order to score.

Unfortunately, it does happen and we need to be informed in order to protect ourselves against the harm that exists in our world. Stay safe girls!
