Women have come a long way since the Mad Men days where our roles in society were so clearly defined. Mother and wife; we were expected to stay home and tend to the kids while our husbands brought home the bacon. Even in the workplace, women never had the opportunity to rise above the men, or hold any management role. This is of course, a thing of the past.
Fast forward to the new millennium. Gender roles are no longer quite as clearly defined as before. Women are CEOs, doctors, and lawyers. More often than not, they are also mothers and wives. Not to borrow an old cliche, but what the men can do, we women can do just as well, if not better. It goes beyond just enjoying equal rights now – it’s the shattering of preconceived notions that the female should be submissive to the male, whether at home, at the work place, or even in a relationship. It was all about empowerment.
One major expression of this sense of empowerment has been through fashion, even more so lately, as evident from all the power that’s been dominating the fashion scene. Sharp shoulder blazers, military-inspired dresses, killer heels… Women fashion today seems hell bent on projecting the whole “I’m a woman, hear me roar!” image.
But don’t get me wrong! It’s not about adopting the role of a dominatrix whether at home or at work. Women today play multiples roles – the mother, the co-worker, the girlfriend/wife; it’s more liberating, but more confusing at the same time. It’s all about finding the balance when switching between one role to another, without losing your sense of identity, and that sense of empowerment. Empowerment is about feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin, having a healthy self-esteem and self-image, no matter which role you are playing.
It can be tiring and trying at times juggling the various roles. How difficult it is that we need to look and feel at the top of our game at all times when all we want to do is crawl back into bed on some days? That’s why we have selected a few of our favourite fashion pieces that would have you feeling and looking like the Super Woman you are, no matter which role you are slipping into for the day!
At the Workplace
The Perfect Suit
The perfect suit – the perfect expression of feminine empowerment! Don the suit, and the effect it has on your self-confidence is immediate, and almost magical! A well-tailored suit is flattering and cinches at all the right spots, and is in no way man-ish at all!
The Feminine Workdress
Just because you are the boss at work doesn’t mean you have to strut around in a pantsuit barking orders. A well-cut work dress exudes that same kind of authority and power without compromising on your femininity. A classic Audrey Hepburn- esque dress with a sexy fitted waist, bateau neckline and figure loving pleated tulip skirt like the one shown above is suitable for all work environments. Even if you work in a company with a strict dress code, choose your work dress in a sweet colour such as pink – anything that is not black! Formal does not equate to boring!
The Essential Pair of Pumps
You may have 200 pairs of shoes in your shoe cupboard, but your shoes collection isn’t quite complete until you have that essential pair of black pumps. A staple pair of shoes that would go with everything in your closet, a good pair of pumps will bring you easily from work to play, whilst never compromising on comfort. And when you feel at the top of the world in your shoes, hardly anything is impossible!
The Well-Tailored Shirt
A work dress not quite your thing? A well-tailored shirt hugs your curves and flatters your body shape and serves up the feminine factor too. Try one with ruffles or lace detailing for a more updated version of the classic white shirt. Whether plain or with details, the crisp tailored shirt is your best option for versatility, and is a truly classic item that always remain stylish no matter what way you wear it!
The Little Black Dress
Designed and coined by Miss Coco Chanel herself, no self-respecting woman’s wardrobe should be without at least one Little Black Dress! With a little time and investment to find the right one, the LBD can be the Fairy Godmother of all dresses, something that you can throw on at the last minute and look beautiful in. Whether this is in detailing – like lace, jewels, or ruffles, or how the dress is cut – such as a deep v-neck, or halter, the LBD will accentuate and flatter every part of you!
The Versatile Sundress
There’s no such thing as too many dresses for a girl! For occasions where you want to look more Felicia Chin than Megan Fox, the Summer Dress is an essential part of your wardrobe. With its palette of bright colours and eye-catching prints, the summer dress is a lovely contrast, yet a perfect complement, to the Little Black Dress. Perfect for days when you just want to play up your feminine wiles!
The Killer Stilettos
Just like dresses, a girl can never have enough shoes. And where would a girl be without at least a pair of strappy stilettos that is entirely too high and and much too impractical? Your back aches every single time you wear them, but when you throw it on, your legs look longer, your butt looks perkier and there is a strut to your walk. Instant self-esteem booster!
The Mysterious Sunglasses
For days when you that no matter what you do you just feel absolutely blah. Invest in a pair of designer shades (or even just a designer inspired pair), and put them on whenever you don’t feel like meeting the scrutiny of the world (or when the weather’s too hot, whatever). Best thing about these sunglasses? It instantly amps your cool quotient and gives you an air of mystery.
Is there any use for a clutch which barely holds your wallet and lipstick? A huge oversized tote is much more practical, and useful when you just cannot be bothered to pick and choose between items to fit into a tiny little clutch. I would take being prepared over being flustered any day, thank you very much! P.S.: Get one in a striking colour for the hawt factor!
The Perfect Pair of Jeans
Like the Little Black Dress, fashion experts unanimously agree that a pair of jeans should be one of your wardrobe essentials. Not just any old pair of jeans, mind you, the PERFECT pair of jeans. The one that immediately flatters your butt, and make your legs look like they belong to a Victoria’s Secret model. Of course, a pair of jeans like this doesn’t come cheap, and isn’t easy to come by either. But when you finally come across the right pair, the hunt would be all worth it! One pair would be all you need for dressed up or down days!
Where would Cat Woman be without her latex catsuit? Just like how the costumes of these comic characters transform them from normal beings to kick-ass super heroines, these outfits would make you feel like you’re ready to take on anything that is thrown your way! Superpowers not included.
