Naugo, which provides innovative services in maritime logistics and transportation by gathering small ships operated by individuals in Indonesia on a platform, started a delivery service that delivers goods to nearby islands starting from May 12, 2020.
The service was launched in Lombok and three nearby islands, La Buan Bajo and four nearby islands, and Makassar and three nearby islands, targeting 30,000 inhabitants in 10 islands. It is a delivery service that delivers various items to small islands. It has achieved a transaction scale of 78 million IDR (approximately 7.8 million won, equivalent to a 1.5-year annual salary of locals) within two months of its initiation, and is expanding its business to self-employed people located on the island.
Indonesia is an archipelago country made up of 17,000 islands, of which 7,000 inhabited islands are scattered across the entire country, 5,000 km east to west, making domestic logistics and transportation far worse than overseas imports and exports.
Due to economic issues, the number of operations and routes of large ships are also limited, resulting in a large price difference of close to 20% even from passing the sea once from the land to an island, and the types of goods available are also greatly reduced. Also, due to the waiting time at the port, there is a considerable delay before the ordered item arrives.
Naugo was launched in October 2019 (corporation establishment in March 2020) to provide a solution that achieves long distance and timely delivery by building a network of small ships that are commonly seen in Indonesia. As a business, it is currently focusing on the matching platform that provides small ships according to the needs of individuals and businesses.
Currently, Naugo is providing the delivery service by using the most widely used messenger WhatsApp to receive orders from business operators and individuals, and connecting with individual ship owners through the system. By creating a marketplace by acquiring a large number of suppliers from a large island, it delivers the orders to a nearby small island once every 3-7 days as soon as it is placed. It delivers daily supplied like rice, drinking water, cooking oil, flour, eggs, diapers, and powdered milk that are very cumbersome for residents from small islands to go out to large islands to buy, so the word is already spread among the residents.
By the end of the year, it is planning to provide comprehensive transportation and delivery services by developing the platform through its own mobile app and chatbot that automates orders by processing natural language based on messengers.
Naugo plans to provide life-based services such as transportation and delivery to nearby islands based on small ships like Uber in the future, and expand the service to mid- to long-distance distribution networks using small ship networks.
