When the pandemic grew more widespread in Singapore and Malaysia earlier this year, I became very busy with volunteer work. I was under a lot of stress as the situation worsen. There was also a a lack of resources, and to add on to that, I was inexperienced. Very often, I would not have sufficient sleep and rest, for besides having to solve many issues on my own, I also had to meet many clients to discuss fund-raising events for the people who had been greatly affected by the pandemic.
I was under such long-term stress and I neglected my self-care. I realised that my skin was becoming dull and it was lacking in elasticity. My skin tone was also uneven, and prolonged exposure to the sun caused pigmentation spots and even fine lines. It would be a lie to say I was not concerned about the deterioration of my skin, because I did indeed look like I’ve aged a lot! Hence, when Phase 2 of the Circuit Breaker began, I decided to head to Halley Medical Aesthetics and let the doctor solve my skin problems.
I consulted with Dr. Terence Tan at Halley Medical Aesthetics, and upon understanding and analysing my skin issues, he suggested a treatment with the Fraxel Dual Laser first, and then a PicoSure treatment one month later.
About Fraxel Dual Laser Treatment
Fraxel Dual Laser facial rejuvenation treatment uses fractional laser to reduce scarring and blemishes. It has a wide range of benefits, from improving skin tone and texture, lightening pigments and evening out skin tone, to stimulating collagen growth for pore size reduction, and reducing the appearance of fine lines. The Fraxel Dual Laser is non-ablative, which means it penetrates deep into the skin to target damaged skin while leaving the surrounding tissues untouched, and it promotes skin renewal from inside out, hence reducing redness of the skin during the treatment! The recovery time is thus also shorter as compared to ablative lasers, and healing is a lot faster! In addition, the Fraxel Dual Laser can also treat the undereye area and neck area, tightening and firming the skin in these areas!
Fraxel Dual Laser
The Fraxel 1550nm (Er:Glass) laser is conducive for the reconstruction of deep skin tissues, and can treat skin pigmentation and ageing-related issues such as age spots, sun spots, solar keratosis, and melasma, as well as wrinkles around the eyes, acne scarring, and other skin blemishes.
The 1927nm (Thullium) wavelength laser targets the superficial layers of the skin to improve skin tone, texture, pigmentation, and other signs of ageing.
What you should avoid after the treatment:
1: It is necessary to avoid sunbathing, exposure to UV rays, direct exposure to sunlight, etc.
Fraxel Dual Laser treatment experience:
1: The therapist will apply numbing cream to your face for numbing of the full face.
2: Simultaneous cooling. The Fraxel machine is paired with the ZIMMER cooling system, and it can greatly reduce the chances of the skin being damaged by the heat from the laser. During the treatment, the doctor will use the cooling system to simultaneously cool the skin while treating it with the laser. Once the treatment is completed, the cooling system can also be used to cool the skin.
3: The doctor will begin the treatment with a low power to allow your skin to gradually become accustomed to it.
4: The doctor will then increase the power of the laser, treating the skin with the 1550nm wavelength laser first, then the 1927nm wavelength laser after.
5: As everyone may have different reactions to the treatment, should you feel any discomfort, you may request for the doctor to pause the treatment temporarily before resuming.
6: After the treatment, you may not see an immediate change on the surface of your skin, however, there may be slight redness and puffiness after 15 minutes or so. However, do not worry as that is normal. These effects will also eventually fade away on their own.
After-Treatment Care for the next 24 hours to 7 days:
Important! Ensure maximum hydration and protection from the sun! Ensure maximum hydration and protection from the sun! Ensure maximum hydration and protection from the sun! When it’s important, you gotta say it thrice!
- I’d recommend using water or hypoallergenic facial cleansers to cleanse your face. Do not scrub the skin too roughly, and use a towel to pat dry after.
2: Apply a moisturising facial mask once daily, or apply gentle cosmetic products with medical grade ingredients to keep your skin thoroughly hydrated for at least a week. I have been using Halley’s Brilliance Skincare products which are physician-grade cosmeceuticals. You may also enquire with them about these products.
The Brilliance Skin Barrier Defence ($24.70) and Super Recovery Cream ($40.80) are formulated by Halley Medical Aesthetics for moisturising and hydrating skin post-laser treatments, and helps to speed up skin recovery. I feel at ease using these products, and they also save me the time and trouble from having to look for other products for post-treatment usage. I like that these Brilliance Skincare products do not have artificial chemical smells, have light textures, are not oily, and do not burden the skin. Highly recommended!
- For the first two days, my face was slightly red and puffy, but not everyone experiences this.
- On the second and third days, my skin felt dry and rough to the touch and it felt like sandpaper. However, there is no need to worry as this is caused by the aged skin cells, and as new skin cells are produced, the older skin cells on the surface of the skin will gradually peel off.
5: On the fourth to fifth days, the dead skin cells on the top layer had already begun peeling off, and my skin was regaining its smooth and youthful texture!
- On the sixth to eighth days, my skin had already been completely renewed and looked smooth and bright! At this point, it’s especially easy to put on make-up!
- Once the peeling is completed, you may find that your skin is slightly reddish for the next few weeks. While it’s common for redness to fade in a week or so after treatment, the skin may still be slightly reddish for a few weeks.
Fraxel Dual Laser Facial Rejuvenation Benefits
As everyone’s skin is different, it is difficult to accurately predict the actual results of the treatment. While some patients may have very visible improvements, some others may only have slight improvements. Typically, a series of treatments will have to be completed for optimal results. Personally, I am very satisfied with the results of my Fraxel Dual Laser treatment!
