Your long-awaited vacation is finally here. You board the airplane in excitement, only to be greeted by an acne on your face when you reached your destination. Why oh why...
Airplane acne is not a myth, and it is really more common than you think. What voodoo does an airplane have and why does our skin breakout mid-air? How can we prevent that from happening? Let's find out.
What causes airplane acne?
The main cause of airplane acne is none other than the dry cabin air. If you have dry skin, the dry air may lead to a buildup of oil under your skin cells, and if you have oily skin, your skin will produce even more sebum to compensate for the dryness in the environment, leading to the formation of acne. On top of that, the stress your body is going through when you cross time zones and resets your body clock can also trigger an outbreak.
How can I prevent airplane acne?
- 1. Hydrate your skin
Since the dry cabin is the main culprit, it is important to keep your skin hydrated. Use a mask pack before you leave home to catch your flight and slather on lots of moisturiser. You can even bring a mask pack to use during the flight to ensure that your skin is well hydrated. Make sure that you drink lots of water to hydrate your skin from inside out too.
- 2. Exfoliate well
Get rid of the dead skin cells that are sitting on the top layer of your skin by exfoliation. It will ensure that the mask pack and the skincare products you apply are effectively absorbed into your skin. It will also help to clear up the congestion in your pores so that the risk of inflammation is reduced.
- 3. Skip makeup
Try your best to skip makeup when you board the airplane. Think about it this way, it will prevent clog pores and acne outbreaks, and there's nothing a big pair of sunglasses and a face mask can't hide.
