As a brand new year approaches, our social media feeds are already giving us a pretty good idea of what's hot and what's not in the makeup scene. While we see lots of highlighted cheeks and natural eye makeup in 2019, 2020 will be a shout out to natural skin and eye colours that are bright and bold.

M·A·C Cosmetics’ Executive Director, Global Makeup Artistry, Lyne Desnoyers, and Senior Manager, Makeup Artistry, Regan Rabanal shared the key makeup trends for Spring/Summer 2020 with us during the collection's launch last week, and here are a bevy of trends that you may want to start with for the upcoming Christmas and New Year parties.

1. Real Skin

Spring/Summer 2020 will see the re-emergence of the classic matte look which is suitable for almost any occasion; from the office and big boardroom to cocktail parties and soirees.

To nail the Real Skin beauty look, Lyne Desnoyers and Regan Rabanal recommend using M·A·C Cosmetics Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 ($59) foundation that is formulated to achieve a full coverage matte finish or the Lightful C Naturally Flawless Foundation ($67). The natural look can also be achieved using the Studio Face and Body Foundation ($56), a backstage favourite, thanks to its natural finish that also looks great on high definition.

2. Fresh-Faced

Don't worry, Korean glowy skin supporters. Although matte skin will be trending in 2020, the glowy healthy skin look is also here to stay. To achieve this look, try  M·A·C Cosmetics’ Studio Perfect Hydrating Cushion Compact ($67) and the Coral Grass Cushion Compact ($69), both formulated for maintaining bright, radiant skin tones.

3. Contemporary Glamour

Don't be afraid of colours in 2020. While the classic browns are always here to stay, step out of your comfort zone in 2020. For Spring/Summer 2020, add swatches of bright colours in shades of yellow, green or even red to your eyes to liven up your overall appearance. For an unconventional, graphic yet chic look, try the neon-coloured cat-eye. And if you are keen on experimenting with cool coloured eye makeup, the white eyeliner is ideal for accentuating your eyes.

To nail the Contemporary Glamour look, both Lyne and Regan recommend using the Technakohl Liner ($34), a rich and intense colour mechanical eyeliner pencil that is formulated for long-wear. With a selection of coloured eyeliners in over 30 shades, select your favourite that best suits your personality and style – and flaunt it.

4. Dark Strokes

Go dark, but there's no need to go back to your emo goth look that you rocked in your teenage years. Look confident with a well-defined and pigmented cat eye and a dark lip colour this Spring/Summer 2020. With the emergence of dark colours including caviar and rich bordeaux, this look gives its wearer a bold and well-poised appearance.

According to Lyne: “The colour black seen on eyes has either a spontaneous feel to it or a lot of precision. To rock this look, texture and placement are equally important as it determines the mood of the makeup. There has also been a return of a darker lip colour – from rich bordeaux to caviar coloured – dark lips are both romantic and delicate, and precise application is key.”

To nail the Dark Strokes look, Lyne recommends using the Matte Lipstick ($33) and Pro Longwear Fluidline Gel Eyeliner ($34).
