[Blogger Roanna] My Childhood Hero – The One Who Gave Birth To Me

We all have that one person in our lives that we look up to since childhood. For me, it might be cliché to say that my childhood hero is none other than my mother, the one who gave birth to me, but you’ll know why if you decide to spend 3 minutes of your life with this read.

Life is not as rosy as it seems on my social media handles. Well, we all portray the best in our lives when it comes to Instagram or Facebook right? You see, I wasn’t born with riches, a big house or a car. Pretty much everything I have now is from my hard work and hard-earned money over the years. I didn’t also come from a complete, happy family because of my dad. In fact, this made my other family members closer and tighter as we all unite against the one evil monster that’s causing us distress day-in-day-out. It wasn’t easy for me to brave through my childhood with all the attacks from the evil monster (let’s just call him that, shall we?), but I know the woman who’s going through it all have it worse. That woman is my mum.

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."—Martin Luther King, Jr.

Despite all that she suffered, she continues to believe in miracles. Silly as it sounds to many out there, she still holds on to the belief that people can change and good will prevail. Raising us single-handedly with what is probably enough for one, she managed to feed, clothe, and send the three of us to school on her own for many years.

“Love is blind”, they say, and through my childhood years, I understood it more than anything. With all that she needed to bear, and the countless number of chances she gave, disappointment was all she received, every single time. Yet, she continues to hustle and trudge on without giving up. I don’t know how she managed to find strength from within but whenever I feel like giving up, I’d think of my mother, about how she is still holding on despite all that she endured. It is tough, in fact, very tough, if you knew what she had to go through, but at the end of the day, she still manages a smile. I hope she continues to acquire strength from within and that this short story will also inspire you to not give up in times of darkness.
