We spent so much time on our smartphones and laptops, so much so that our necks and shoulders are screaming for help. Why? Because “tech neck”.
Tech neck refers to “cervical kyphosis, a frequently painful condition that results from the hunchback slouch many individuals employ when they’re using their electronic devices.” (source: Spinal Institute of North America) When we are browsing our social media or reading texts, we unconsciously bend ourselves forward, and that creates a lot of tension on our neck and shoulders and places a great amount of strain on our spine.

This new health condition that arises because of our screen-centric culture doesn’t just affect the older crowd. Younger people are feeling the pain in their neck too and their condition will worsen with age and increased screen time. If your tech neck is affecting your daily routines, it is best to see a doctor and get it treated before things head further south. If it is still manageable, consciously maintaining a good posture, and doing some stretching exercise can help you alleviate the pain.
